One solitary life

Two thousand years ago He was born in an obscure village. He lived in poverty and was reared in obscurity. He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher.
He never owned a home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put His foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place He was born. He gathered a little group of friends about Him and taught them His way of life.
He was only 33 when the public turned against Him. His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves. While He was dying,His executioners gambled for His clothing,the only property He had on earth. When He was dead, He was laid in a borrowed grave.
Twenty centuries have come and gone,and today He is the central figure of the human race. When we try to sum up His influence, all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that were ever built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life.

當 大 眾 都 公 然 反 對 他 時 ， 他 才 卅 三 歲 。 他 的 朋 友 都 逃 跑 了 。 其 中 一 個 不 認 他 。 另 一 個 把 他 交 給 仇 敵 。 他 經 歷 了 遭 人 嘲 弄 的 審 判 ， 被 釘 在 兩 個 強 盜 之 間 的 十 字 架 上 。 在 他 快 要 死 時 ， 執 行 死 刑 的 兵 丁 拈 鬮 分 他 的 衣 服 ─ ─ 他 在 地 上 唯 一 的 財 物 。 當 他 死 時 ， 他 被 埋 葬 在 一 個 借 來 的 墓 穴 。
廿 個 世 紀 來 了 又 走 了 ， 而 他 至 今 仍 是 人 類 的 焦 點 。 當 我 們 要 總 結 他 對 人 類 的 影 響 時 ， 我 們 只 能 說 ： 若 將 所 有 曾 作 過 戰 的 軍 隊 、 所 有 曾 興 建 過 的 海 軍 、 所 有 曾 召 開 過 的 議 會 、 所 有 曾 統 治 過 的 君 王 ， 都 集 合 起 來 ， 我 們 會 發 現 ， 這 些 偉 大 人 物 對 這 個 世 界 的 影 響 ， 特 別 是 對 人 類 生 命 的 影 響 力 ， 都 不 及 這 孤 獨 的 生 命 來 得 巨 大 。 （ 翻 譯 及 整 理 ： 馮 文 娜 ）
